2 out of 5 stars very frustrating to use   January 22, 2009

buy the lonely planet. the rough guide is a poor substitute.

this book is basically missing all of the most essential things that i look for in a guidebook. the maps are poorly done and lack detail. the maps also have very limited coverage. there is no pricing information, which means in order to compare places you have to take an extra step of actually calling to figure out how much they charge. the index is poorly organized. and it doesn't list distances from one place to another so you have to cross-reference a bunch of different travel times (usually only by bus, totally ignoring people who drive themselves) in order to get an estimate of travel time. i'm the kind of person who likes to create his own travel experience and using this book made me feel like i was groping in the dark at times.

maybe all of this is an effort by the authors to differentiate themselves from the lonely planet by making their guide a little "rougher." if that was their intent, they definitely succeeded. unfortunately for the authors, when someone is in a foreign country alone with only a guidebook to tell him where to stay, what to eat and how to get around, he needs his guidebook to be "comprehensive" and "accurate" rather than rough."

1 out of 5 stars Dont count on it   January 27, 2009

It gave me some interesting info for my recent trip, but as a guidebook it is useless. Accomodations are all lumped together. You don't know if you are reading about a hotel that cost $10 or $400 a night. The author rarely provides this info. The hotel we stayed at in San Jose was the Marriott in San antonio de Belen, a major hotel, one of the biggest, yet it was not listed in the guide. Other hotels that are more expensive were listed. Frommers is the best in my opinion. The Moon guide was pretty good.

1 out of 5 stars Recommended accomodation was appalling   July 23, 2009

I just returned from Costa Rica, having spent over two weeks there and staying at 5 different places and types of accomodations. I primarily used a Frommer's guide that I had brought and only used this guide to find accomodations in one town that was not featured in Frommer's. The guide said it would be a difficult road to the lodge they recommended, but it was nearly an impossible road to drive. It was about 2 km, all downhill, to the lodge with nowhere to turn around, so once you turned down the road you had to continue to the end. Getting out the next day would have been absolutely impossible without the 4 wheel drive vehicle I had rented and I only made it out with the help of a good samaritan (the vehicle still got stuck 6 times). We "bottomed out" many times trying to navigate and I am just praying that the rental car doesn't call me to pay for damages to the bottom of the vehicle. We were very fortunate that the axle wasn't broken. The cabin we stayed in (that was recommended in this guide), while having a gorgeous view, was overrun with rodents - poop falling from the ceiling!! When we got up in the morning, it was all over the kitchen counters, etc and even all over the bed that my son had moved from the middle of the night!! I say "got up" because I did not sleep all night. We were on the side of a mountain and there was a terrible storm and this cabin was missing many panes of glass in the windows. The terrible winds and rain just blew right through the cabin, dampening us and all our belongings and luggage. Since we were far from the main house of the lodge keeper and the road back to the main road was impassible, we were stuck. I was furious that this was a featured lodge in this travel guide!! I understand that Costa Rican standards are a little different, but this place was unhealthy and uninhabitable. The writers should do more research before recommmending such abominable places to stay!!
